Satellite microwave observations have been providing key datasets needed for accurate numerical weather prediction (NWP), reliable climate change monitoring, and consistent data assimilations in NWP and climate reanalyses.
Accurate instrument calibration and inter-calibration are building blocks and prerequisite for using the satellite microwave observations in respective applications.
In recognizing the critical roles of calibration, cross-calibration and data product validation, the Committee on Earth Observation Satellites Working Group on Calibration and Validation (CEOS WGCV) and Global Space-based Inter-Calibration System (GSICS) had established their respective subgroups for microwave sensors to foster calibration activities within the satellite community.
These activities have been supporting calibration/cross-calibration for both operational and research satellites operated by satellite agencies in different countries.
In the past years, CEOS/WGCV and GSICS Microwave Subgroups have been focusing on different microwave instruments and developed specific calibration and cross-calibration approaches for corresponding instruments.
In order to foster exchanges between the two working groups, a “CEOS/WGCV-GSICS Microwave Subgroups Joint Meeting” will be held in Beijing, China during July 6-7, 2016.
