Investigating Pre-service EFL Teachers’ Agency from a CDST Perspective

  Teacher agency plays a pivotal role in every aspect of education, such as teachers’ everyday teaching practice, teachers’ professional development, the implementation of educational policies and teachers’ reactions to curriculum reform or pedagogical innovations etc... Thus, cultivating teachers’ agency is of great significance for both teachers and policy makers, even learners. While teacher education has been criticized to be invalid in helping teachers esp. pre-service teachers to get fully prepared for classroom teaching for scarcity of agency emerged during the program. As a result of that, investigating how pre-service EFL teachers’ agency emerge and develop in teacher education programs would offer implications to educators and policy makers to better facilitate or monitor their agency development trajectories towards positive directions. The present study would take a qualitative research method—case study in order to explore agency development processes of pre-service EFL teachers and adopt a new perspective—CDST to analyze the development trajectories and try to identify indicating factors of agency change. Hopefully, the present study could shed light on teacher educations for pre-service EFL teachers to facilitate them in their future teaching career.
