An indirect edge detection method for 2D digital image was presented. The basic idea of this method was to partition the image domain into edge and non-edge region, and the edge regions are the differences between an image definition domain and its non-edge regions. This method is using the maximum value of the finite direction derivative to approximate image gradient magnitude, to suppress the non-edge regions pixels in the transition zones with a single threshold value, adopting morphological operation to close the non-edges regions; and obtained the edges of an image after excluding non-edge regions from the image definition domain. The image edge detection results of tank filler were illustrated. The results show that, this method is simple, and may be extracted the real boundary in the image.
