Wind farms are being sited offshore to capture consistent and lofty amount of energy. Offshore wind farms are intended to farther off from coast to maximize the turbine size and to reduce the visual impacts. Voltage source control-VSC based multi terminal high voltage direct current (MTDC) technology is anticipated for assimilating offshore wind farms to regional transmission grid.
In this paper, topologies of VSC based MTDC system have been reconnoitered along with VSC based MTDC system requirements and HVDC switch gear. A Novel 2WF-1PF topology has been proposed. MTDC link topologies have been analyzed and likened based on following criteria: number of HVDC circuit breakers, quantity, length and capacity of HVDC circuits, number of offshore platforms, flexibility, redundancy, utilization and number of onshore platforms of HVDC circuits. Technical analysis proved that 2WF-1PF topology is better than all and shows economic feasibility for future HVDC grids.
