A stabilized material point method for coupled hydro-mechanical problems in saturated soils

摘要
The material point method (MPM) is increasingly employed to simulate hydromechanical coupling processes in porous media with large deformations. For weakly compressible or incompressible problems, conventional MPM with low-order shape functions suffers from volumetric locking and cell-crossing error, which induce spurious pore pressure oscillations. In this study, we propose a stabilized explicit MPM scheme based on the Generalized Interpolation Material Point Method (GIMP) with grid-cell averaging of velocity gradients, effectively mitigating the numerical oscillations. Validation through three benchmark cases confirm the stability of the proposed scheme. Simulation results demonstrate that the stabilized MPM framework accurately reproduces both quasi-static and dynamic hydromechanical responses.
