Hybrid DC circuit breaker is one of the mainstream directions of DC circuit breakers. At present, the conventional fast mechanical switching arc voltage is low, resulting in natural transfer difficulties during large-capacity breaking, and additional forced transfer devices are required. It is significant to improve the arc voltage of fast mechanical switches to enhance their current transfer performance. This paper proposes the idea of series connection of disc-type multi-contact nitrogen-hydrogen gas contact and vacuum contact, using the advantages of high gas arc pressure and fast recovery of vacuum, the series connection is expected to increase the arc pressure to 500-1000V, realizing the fast transfer of hybrid DC circuit breakers. A prototype of vacuum and nitrogen-hydrogen mixed gas tandem linkage switch is developed, and an experimental platform for arc characteristics is set up to study the effects of different current sizes, gas media, contact opening distance, magnetic field strength and gas pressure on the arc voltage. The hybrid DC circuit breaker current transfer experiment platform is built, and the current transfer experiment is carried out. The results show that when the current is 25 kA, the current transfer time can be reduced from 350 μs to 143 μs by using the series linkage switch, which is 59% shorter than that of a traditional vacuum switch. The effectiveness of series linkage switching to enhance current transfer performance in hybrid DC circuit breakers is preliminarily verified. It provides a reference basis for the development of high-performance hybrid DC circuit breaker prototypes.
