Eliminating the usage of SF6 gas in switchgear is an important measure to achieve carbon neutrality. In this paper, a totally F-gas free gas insulated switchgear (GIS) with a rated voltage of 252kV, rated current of 4000A and rated interruption current of 50 kA was designed. Clean air with a pressure of 0.8 Mpa was filled inside the GIS for insulation. Two vacuum interrupters were connected in series for short circuit current interruption. The vacuum interrupters, the isolating switch, the earthing switch and the fast earthing switch were all driven by servo motors of different power to reach programmed operation. Four grading capacitors were used for voltage grading of the vacuum interrupters considering their main shields. An online vacuum degree detection system based on laser-induced plasma emission spectroscopy was employed to detect possible leakage of the vacuum interrupter. The designed GIS is now under the production procedure, and is hopeful to become the world’s first F-gas free GIS at the voltage level of 252kV.
