Measurement and study of pressure characteristics of several typical eco-friendly gases in small current interruption process

With the increasing environmental protection requirements of various countries, there is a highly demand to find suitable alternative gas to replace SF6 which is widely used as insulation and interruption medium in power system due to its high GWP value. In this paper, based on the circuit breaker operating in practice, a prototype for arc parameter measurement during current interruption process is established. Subsequently, a small current breaking test was carried out in SF6 and three typical potential SF6 alternative gases including N2, CO2, C4F7N/CO2, to obtain the pressure characteristics at key positions of arcing chamber during the breaking process. Finnly, the differences of pressure characteristics and the possible causes of the differences in the breaking process of the above gases are analyzed and discussed. The measurement of pressure characteristic in the small current interruption process of different eco-friendly gases could provide data support for the verification of the suitable arc model for potential SF6 alternative gas and the study of the influence of turbulence on the arc extinguishing process.
