Vanadium redox flow batterry (VRFB) provide an effective solution to the intermittent power output issue associated with wind and solar power generation. However, the development and popularization of VRFBs are greatly hindered by their substantial size requirements and expensive nature. Therefore, it is necessary to optimize operating conditions, minimize capacity loss, and enhance battery performance in order to achieve the objective of cost reduction. This paper investigates the effects of membrane thickness, current density, flow rate, and self-discharge on battery capacity through conducting experiments. The experimental results show that as the membrane thickness increases, the resistance to proton transport increases, weakening the electrochemical reaction and reducing the energy storage capacity; When the current density and flow rate exceed the critical value, it will also lead to a decrease in capacity; Long-term shelving leads to severe self-discharge reactions, which accelerates the deterioration of energy storage capacity. The research indicates that changing the operating conditions can decrease battery capacity degradation.
