Evolution of Dielectric properties of cross-linked polyethylene under thermal-oxidative aging

摘要
Cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) is widely used as the insulation material of nuclear electrical cables due to its excellent mechanical and electrical properties. The condition monitoring technique is essential for the safe and stable operation of the nuclear power plant. As the key characteristics, dielectric properties are important for assessing the insulation state of cables. This study focus on the dielectric properties evolution of cross-linked polyethylene under thermal-oxidative aging. In this work, XLPE specimens were thermally aged in an air-circulating oven at 165 °C and removed at 0 h, 48 h, 96 h, 168 h, and 336 h for analysis. The dielectric properties were investigated through the Frequency Domain Spectroscopy (FDS) at 100 °C in a frequency range from 10-1 to 106 Hz and the structural changes were analyzed with the Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. The complex permittivity spectra of XLPE with different aging time were fitted by Havriliak-Negami(HN) equations, the relaxation parameters as well as the DC conductivity were obtained to investigate the influence of thermal-oxidative aging on dielectric properties of XLPE. The results show that the fitting computation results are consistent with the experimental ones based on the HN equations. The real and imaginary permittivity augment on mid-frequency with the increase of aging time due to the dipolar polarization α. Also, the relaxation time constant τα and the dipolar polarization intensity ∆α augment with the aging duration. Besides, the DC conductivity increases sharply within the first 48 hours, giving a rise to the imaginary permittivity on low frequency. This study has shown that thermal-oxidative aging can significantly affect the dielectric response, especially at the early stages of aging. It is found that there is a good correlation between these three parameters and the insulation state of XLPE cables.
