Steel plate composite beam bridge is the main form of steel bridge with small and medium span. There are plenty of problems on the corresponding maintenance technology, especially preventative maintenance. However, there are limited studies on it and its applications in China. Based on domestic and overseas research on literatures and examples, preventative maintenance in the U.S. is introduced, and the problems of bridge maintenance in China is concluded. The main forms, principles and treatment of diseases on steel plate composite beam with small and medium span are concluded. Finally, the principle of durability preventative maintenance is promoted and a case analysis is conducted. The maintenance technology proposed in this paper could be a reference for preventative maintenance of steel plate composite beam bridges with small and medium span in China.
