The failure of automated driving systems (ADS) in automated vehicles AV is inevitable. There is limited empirical research on the consequence of automation failure on people’s attitudinal responses of and trust in AVs. We assume and examine the negative impacts of ADV failures on trust in AVs, perceived usefulness (PU) and perceived ease of use (PEU) associated with AVs, perceived safety while riding in AVs, and willingness to ride (WTR) in AVs. In our field experiment with a between-subjects design, 400 participants are invited to experience an AV as passengers and recorded their trust in AVs and other attitudinal responses before and after experiencing the AV. Half of them will experience an ADV failure. Our research will extend our field knowledge about the detrimental influence of ADV failures.
