摘要
The maintenance is essential to keep good roadway conditions. Nevertheless, it is inevitable that the crash risk increases in the work zone. There have been many efforts to minimize the risk in the work zone by installing orange colored signs, doubling fines, providing information by fixed and portable dynamic message signs, etc. Still, work-zone related crashes are considered as a serious issue. In this study, we investigate the safety effects of work zone advisory systems. The traditional system includes a dynamic message signs while the advanced system includes an in-vehicle work zone warning application. The comparative analysis was conducted using microsimulation experiments, and the calibration was conducted using the actual traffic volume data and dynamic message signs message data. The results indicate that the advanced system outperforms the traditional one. From this study, the optimal distance of placing a dynamic message sign is about 1000m ahead of work zone when there is no traffic congestion and more than 1000m when in traffic congestion. The higher the market penetration rate of connected vehicle is, the higher level of road network safety will be. The integrated approaches of offering more detailed information in the connected vehicle environment are expected to effectively improve the safety in the work zone.
