Research on the Influence of ADAS Equipment on Driving Smoothness on Freeway Using Natural Driving Test Data

ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance System) is regarded as the primary stage of intelligent vehicle and is considered to be a necessary prerequisite for automatic driving. Relevant products are currently in the stage of popularization. However, how does the ADAS equipment affect the drivers on the freeway or expressway. Can it effectively improve driving smoothness? This is the issue that this paper focuses on and analyses. This study is based on small-scale natural driving test data. In Shanghai, 10 drivers made 21 travels (1811 minutes, 1232 kilometers) before and after the installation of ADAS equipment. Mobile phone App is used to collect high-frequency position, speed, acceleration, angular velocity and other data. ANOVA test and Kruskal-Wallis test are used to determine the significantly change of speed, acceleration and steering speed on freeway or expressway before and after the installation. Then the speed, acceleration, steering, lane changing frequency and rapid ac/deceleration behavior are used as indicators to study the smoothness. Results show that the speed and deceleration are slightly decreased. The acceleration, steering speed, rapid steering behavior and the frequency of using turning signals are significantly improved. The lane changing demand do not change much. If the driver is unfamiliar with the warning sound, it may especially cause increase in the rapid deceleration behavior. This paper believes that the current warning strategy should still be improved.
