Characteristic analysis of vehicle speed at urban unsignalized intersection: Taking a real-world intersection in Guangzhou as a case study

摘要
Traffic conflicts and accidents are common phenomenon at uncontrolled intersections. Understanding the characteristics of vehicle speed is useful to improve the safety of intersections. Firstly, this paper takes the Jiansheda-Jiansheer Road intersection in Guangzhou as the observation point and uses the Open-Source-Physics software Tracker to extract the samples, more than 700 valid samples are collected. Secondly, factors that have influence on vehicle speed at the center area of the intersections are discussed. Thirdly, a multinomial logistic model is proposed to understand the relationship between vehicle speed and its influencing factors. Finally, the range of vehicle speed within unsignalized intersection are studied under different scenarios according to the models. Some conclusions are as follow: i)according to the overall situation, the speed of most vehicles at unsignalized intersection is less than 20km/h, ii)the factors that have significant influence on the speed include: vehicle type, turning or go straight, speed when vehicles go through the stop line, vehicles of conflict directions and pedestrians of conflict directions. The study of this paper can help to understand the distribution of vehicle speed within unsignalized intersections and support to improve traffic facilities or management of unsignalized intersections.
