In view of the limited land resources in China, it is impractical to blindly increase the traffic supply to meet residents' travel needs. Therefore, studying the characteristics of residents' travel behavior under multi-modal traffic conditions and understanding residents' travel preferences in order to formulate a reasonable traffic demand management strategy, has important theoretical value and practical significance for guiding public travel demand, implementing the public transportation priority strategy, and solving road congestion problems. Based on the definition of multi-modal traffic, this paper first introduces the development status of multi-mode transportation system in Xi'an, and compares the traffic characteristics and economic characteristics of different modes of transportation to grasp the operating characteristics of each mode of travel. Secondly, combined with the survey data of urban residents' travel, the author analyzes the social and economic attributes, travel characteristics and travel preferences of the travelers. Besides, selects the main influencing factors, and establishes multiple logistic regression models to explore the traveler’s travel choice behavior under multi-modal traffic. Finally, aiming at the traveler characteristics, analyzes the cause of congestion, and proposes a reasonable travel structure—vigorously develop urban public transportation system. The measures for congestion control are also given to guide more people to travel from cars to public transport so that public transport can adapt to the development of urban transport demand.
