Pyrolysis characteristics and photo-fermentative bio-hydrogen production capability of corn straw with different pretreatments

Corn straw is a kind of lignocellulosic biomass with abundant resources, which is widely used for energy production by pyrolysis or fermentation. In this study, the pyrolysis characteristics and photo-fermentative bio-hydrogen production capability of corn straw with different pretreatments were investigated. Thermogravimetric analysis was adopted to study the thermal decomposition behavior of different pretreated corn straw, and a modified Gompertz model was applied to perform the kinetic analysis of hydrogen production from corn straw with different pretreatments. The results showed that corn straw with 4% NaOH-heat treatment had the maximum weight loss of 81.59% in the main pyrolysis stage, and its final residue amount of 10.48% was the least. However, the maximum cumulative hydrogen yield of 137.87 mL·(g TS)-1, hydrogen production rate of 2.40 mL·(g TS·h)-1, hydrogen content of 58.6% and the shortest hydrogen production lag time of 8.82 h were achieved in corn straw pretreated with 2% NaOH. This indicated that 4% NaOH-heat treatment was the most favorable for the pyrolysis of corn straw, and 2% NaOH treatment was the optimal for bio-hydrogen production of corn straw.
