Abstract: The COVID-19 pandemic forced colleges and universities to cease in-person classes and transition to what we call emergency remote teaching (ERT). Emergency remote teaching is a temporary shift of instructional delivery to an alternate delivery mode due to crisis circumstances, in contrary to the online courses which are initially planned and designed to be delivered virtually. Take English writing course of Wuhan University of Technology as an example, this study focuses on the application and evaluation of the effectiveness of ERT using CIPP model, which includes context, input, process and product evaluation. Based on the students' and teachers' experiences of emergency remote teaching as a result of COVID-19, this paper is to give suggestions for optimizing the emergency remote teaching mode in the future. The subjects of the study are undergraduate English Major Students and their teacher taking online English writing course. By using qualitative and quantitative method, a semi-structured questionnaire focusing on students' perception of emergency remote teaching is distributed online, and a face-to-face interview with the teacher is conducted. The results of this case study show that emergency remote teaching is the most effective way under the crisis although it takes some challenges for both students and teachers. According to the results of this study, recommendations will be forwarded to improve the performance of teaching learning activities in preparation for any possible future crisis like COVID-19.
