摘要
Frequency and voltage relays are used to protect networks against abnormal frequencies and voltages. They are also used to detect the islanding of distributed generators. To avoid unwanted tripping during normal operation, frequency and voltage relays use set points and time delays. However, when islanding occurs, set points and time delays effectively delay islanding termination. Simulation with PSCAD and an analytical method for the fatigue estimate of shafts were used to study the effets of set points and time delays on the fatigue life of turbine generator shafts. It was found that frequency set points, voltage set points, and time delays contribute to the loss of fatigue life incurred by turbine-generator shafts during islanding, and this constitutes a disadvantage for this method of islanding detection. Using islanding detection methods that do not rely on thresholds avoids the additional loss of shaft fatigue life caused by frequency and voltage relays.
