The STATCOM will have different effects on suppressing sub-synchronous resonance (SSR) phenomenon of the power system when connected to different locations. This paper makes a comparison of the effect of STATCOM connected to different locations for SSR suppression. By analyzing the equivalent circuit structure of the power system with the STATCOM connected to the generator port or grid side, it is indicated that the SSR of the power system will be suppressed better when the STATCOM is connected to the generator port. Based on the expansion topology of future Jinjie Power Plant, simulation model that STATCOM is connected to different locations for SSR suppression is built. Simulation results show that STATCOM connected to the generator port for SSR suppression is a little more effective than which connected to the grid side.
