Substation inspection is one of the most vital and time-consuming tasks for non-attended smart substations. Nowadays, a constant-frequency inspection pattern is used for all the devices in a substation by most power grid companies. This inspection pattern fails to utilize the individual characteristics of each device and accumulated operational experiences, resulting in unnecessary waste and potential risks. In this paper, an optimization model is proposed to find the optimal inspection pattern for substation devices based on risk analysis. A Monte Carlo-based simulation method is proposed to solve the stochastic model. The method is verified by a test case with actual data obtained from a smart substation located in South China.
