Phosphatidylinositol (PI) metabolic pathway is an important signal transduction pathway involved in various physiological processes. Inositol polyphosphate 5-phosphatase (5PTase) is one of the key enzymes in PI pathway which has been proved to function in many physiological processes including vein formation, hormones effects, etc. However, the role of 5PTase in the induction of programmed cell death is still unclear. Through systemic genetic study of quadruple mutant of 5PTase, we demonstrate a new role of 5PTase in regulating leaf senescence. 5PTase mutant displays chlorophyll degradation, decline of PSⅡ photochemical efficiency, increased membrane ion leakage and up-regulation of senescence-associate-genes. We further elucidate the mechanism how 5PTase regulates aging, which will be presented.
