Candida tropicalis TISTR 5306 was investigated for the effect of nitrogen sources and carbon to nitrogen ratio (C:N ratio) on ethanol and biomass production. Ammonium sulphate and di-ammonium phosphate were used as the nitrogen sources with four concentration levels to obtain the C/N ratios of 3.88, 9.88, 15.88, and 21.88, respectively. The results indicated that C. tropicalis TISTR 5306 cultivated in fresh longan juices supplemented with ammonium sulphate (FLJ-AMS) could produce ethanol and biomass concentration levels significantly higher level (p≤0.05) than di-ammonium phosphate supplemention. FLJ-AMS at C/N ratio of 21.88 was the most suitable medium for cultivation of C. tropicalis TISTR 5306 which had the highest ethanol and biomass at concentration levels of 24.0±1.1 and 9.21±0.32 g/l, respectively, and corresponding Yp/s of 0.394±0.012 g ethanol produced/g sugars consumed.
